Sue Ryder comments on the changes in bereavement benefits that come into force today

Sue Hogston, Chief Nurse at Sue Ryder, said:

"We are incredibly disappointed that the Government is going ahead with plans to make significant changes to bereavement support payments, which come into force today, 6th April 2017.

"Bereavement affects every individual differently and we know from our own experience of providing support that it turns people's lives upside down, often for very prolonged periods.

"By cutting bereavement benefits, the government will only make what is an extremely distressing time more stressful and difficult, affecting families up and down the country.

"At Sue Ryder, we know from our online community and support that bereavement can be devastating. It can be influenced by many different things: your relationship with the person, what happened in the lead-up to their death and the support around you.

"This cut will place even more pressure on people at a time when they are already incredibly vulnerable, trying to adjust to a new way of life and manage new financial pressures - all on top of grieving the loss of their loved one."
