Peterborough hospice holds first ever Palliative Care Seminar

On Wednesday 6th November, over fifty healthcare professionals from across Peterborough, Cambridgeshire and South & West Lincolnshire attended Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice’s first ever Palliative Care Seminar.

An Audience with Speaker at the Palliative Care Seminar in Thorpe Hall
Katy Williams, Senior Sue Ryder Nurse for Hospice at Home at Thorpe Hall Hospice, shares how the team plans to give more at-home palliative care to more people in Peterborough and the surrounding areas.

The event brought together healthcare partners who help deliver end of life and palliative care, with the aim of introducing the specialist services available at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and supporting partnership working.

Sarah Goode, Head of Clinical Services at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice said, “At Sue Ryder we are passionate about giving expert and compassionate palliative care. We are the only purpose built, modern, specialist palliative inpatient unit in the area."

"We offer a vibrant day service and we are providing more care to more people in their own homes through our hospice at home service, too.”

The right care at the right time in the right place

“We wanted to hold an event to inform partners about the specialist services we offer and our plans for the future. Working together with our partners we are committed to supporting people in Peterborough living with a life limiting condition and beyond to receive the right care at the right time in the right place for them.”

The hospice’s Practice Educator, Sylvia Reid, also gave free training into ReSPECT planning – a new approach to encourage people to have an individual plan to try to ensure that they get the right care and treatment in an anticipated future emergency, if they no longer have the capacity to make or express their own choices.

A really vibrant event

Sarah added, “We’re thrilled so many of our healthcare partners joined us for our first ever palliative care seminar. It was a really vibrant event with lots of great discussion and suggestions on future areas for training on palliative care issues. We are looking forward to planning the next seminar.”
