I'm a new healthcare or fundraising volunteer

Welcome to Sue Ryder! We’re so happy to welcome you to our volunteering community.

Your online volunteering hub

Your online volunteering hub is designed to help you make the most of your volunteer journey and act as a handy guide throughout your time at Sue Ryder. As part of your induction, you’ll need to read through this section of the hub where you’ll find important information to help keep you happy, safe and well supported in your role.

If you need any additional support to access or understand this information, please contact your line manager who will be happy to help.

Thank you once again for helping us to be there when it matters.

Preparing for your first day

Before you attend your first day it’s important for you to read through some of our key policies and procedures.

You can download our policies and procedures below:

Your first day

On your first day, before you fully start in your role, your Key Contact will help you to settle in. It’s important to us that you feel at home and completely confident in your role, so please take this opportunity to ask questions and get to know us better.

If your role is virtual or home-based, we will arrange to spend some time with you over the phone or video call to do this, and we will provide you with guidance about working safely from home. If your role is based in one of our care centres or offices, you’ll be given a tour of the building and introduced to other members of your team.

Supervision and support in the role

You will be offered regular opportunities to discuss your role, share feedback and talk through development and support needs. We recommend that you have a catch-up with your Key Contact every month, but this is up to you. As a minimum, you should have a review every six months to make sure you, and we, are happy with how everything is going.

If for any reason you would rather not speak to your manager, you can call our volunteer helpline on 0808 164 4572 or email volunteering@sueryder.org. Our Volunteer team will be happy to help and support you.

Making sure you feel happy and safe in your role is so important to us. We have lots of support in place to make that happen which you can read all about on our Wellbeing and mental health support page.

Dealing with challenges

We hope your experience with us is a great one; however, we appreciate that from time to time things can go wrong. When this happens, we will make sure that issues are handled and resolved as considerately, fairly and timely as possible. Our Talk to Us Volunteer Complaints Procedure will help guide you through the process and understand what to expect at each step of the journey.

If we ever have any concerns about your behaviour or contribution, we will deal with it compassionately and constructively.
