Update: Monday 30 September 2024

We are pleased to share that despite additional repairs being needed and recent adverse weather, our inpatient roof is fixed and finishing touches are being made to the final remaining bedrooms on our inpatient unit

Following a phased approach, our inpatient unit nursing and medical teams are on site preparing to welcome inpatient admissions to our repaired and refurbished unit.

All other Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice services continue to operate as normal.

With roof repairs ongoing to other parts of the hospice building over the next month, we ask all visitors to observe any safety notices or instructions from hospice staff or our contractors.

Please contact the team on 0113 278 7249 or email wheatfields@sueryder.org if you have further questions.

About Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice

Here at Sue Ryder Wheatfields, we combine specialist palliative care for managing pain and other symptoms, with other emotional, practical and wellbeing support.

Our inpatient hospice offers expert care and 24 hour monitoring, to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Sue Ryder Nurses, as part of our specialist team, help with managing pain and alleviating symptoms. We’re here for practical and emotional support too.

Our expert team includes Consultants, specialist doctors, Sue Ryder Nurses, healthcare assistants, physiotherapists, occupational and complementary therapists. We make a personalised care plan for you, combining your wishes with our experts’ advice to meet your needs.

Community services

Our community team, made up of Clinical Nurse Specialists who are supported by our medical team, provide specialist support and care in your own home. We personalise your care and support based on your wishes and preferred place of care.

We offer specialist advice and support around symptom control, medication and therapeutic treatments and are there to support you to be as independent as possible for as long as possible.

Day therapy services

Our day services help support people to be cared for at home for as long as possible, and give you access to necessary services and expert care as you need it. We provide practical and emotional support. By providing day services we also aim to give carers a break too.

We also run "Living Well" groups which aim to support you and develop skills and strategies to deal with things like breathlessness and anxiety.

Whether you’re coping with a terminal illness or facing the loss of someone close, we’re here to help you. At Wheatfields, we will help you to live the best life you can.

Watch: What’s it like inside a Sue Ryder hospice?

Son stands next to his father who is sitting on a sofa and holding a sleeping baby, his grandson. Both father and son are looking at the camera and smiling.

It’s hard to put into words. But one word stands out, which is ‘amazing’. Sue Ryder are just absolutely phenomenal. My dad was so appreciative of the care he received. He was so fond of the carers and nurses.

Making a referral

If your referral is urgent, we would advise you to call the team on 0113 2787249 to ensure we can gain sufficient information and offer a timely response. Please note this phone line is open and monitored Monday - Friday, 8.30am-5pm.

Patients at home are assessed by the Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice community team. Patients in hospital, who wish to be referred to the inpatient unit, need to be assessed by the Hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team who then forward a referral.
