Remember someone special

Grab your trainers and head out on a Walk to Remember this October, to celebrate the memory of someone special.

You can choose your distance, your start and finish line and make it your Walk to Remember with a route that means something to you.

You can walk any day throughout October or join hundreds of others across the country for our official walk day on Saturday 17th October.

How you can help

Entry is free, but it’s your donations and fundraising that will make all the difference to patients and families needing our specialist care.

You can fundraise £145 as a team which could fund a Sue Ryder Nurse for the day or donate £21 to cover an hour of nursing care.

Your donations and fundraising mean so much to us and will go a long way to help others live the best life they possibly can and help Sue Ryder continue to be there when it matters.

Create your team

Encourage your family, friends and colleagues to join you and fundraise as a team. Even if you can’t walk together physically you can start at the same time, check in throughout your walk and share your photos and special moments with one other.

To keep things simple, only the team captain or lead will have to register on behalf of their team.

After you’ve signed up we’ll also be sending you further information on where you can share your photos and join our Walk to Remember Facebook community.

Make it a Walk to Remember by planning your route around a favourite place close to you and your loved one’s heart. 

It could be somewhere you enjoyed walking with your loved one or a route which has a special meaning for you personally while celebrating their life, helping their memory to live on.

Event registration

What is the date of Walk to Remember?

Our official Walk date is Saturday 17th October, however you can walk throughout the month of October.

Is there an Entry Fee?

No, we are delighted to be able to offer free entry to our event. We hope you can consider donating or fundraising as it is this support that will help us be there when it matters for patients and families needing our specialist care. See details below on how you can help support during these challenging times.

Can I enter a team?

Yes, we would love teams to enter and take part as long as everyone is able to maintain social distancing and follow the government guidelines applicable at the time. Teams can also include family and friends and colleagues who may not be able to walk with you physically but can potentially start at the same time and connect with you virtually throughout your Walk to Remember.

Please note that only the team captain or lead will have to register on behalf of their team.

Are children allowed to enter?

Yes we’d encourage everyone to take part, children must be accompanied by a parent or appointed guardian at all times. Please consider others when using public footpaths, including the use of bikes and/or scooters adhering to the Highway Code and up to date government guidelines at all times.

What about dogs?

Yes dogs can certainly join in the fun and we’d encourage you to use routes that are dog friendly.

Do I need to have a good level of fitness to take part.

The event is open to everyone to take part but you are responsible for choosing the appropriate distance based on your own level of fitness. By signing up you agree that you are able to complete your chosen distance. There is no time limit and we encourage you to enjoy the experience with those you are walking with.

When does registration for the event close?

You can walk throughout the month of October but will need to have registered by 26th October.

What will I receive after entering?

A big welcome to the team, lots of information on how to get yourself ready for your walk. An “in memory of” poster to celebrate your loved one; designed to print off and pin to your top, access to fundraising toolkit online and to our Facebook group.

Is there a Facebook Group I can join?

Yes, there is and we will be encouraging participants to engage with other participants, share their stories and photos from their walks.

Fundraising

How can I support Sue Ryder?

With free entry it is your fundraising and donations that can make all the difference to patients and families needing our specialist care.

Is there a minimum fundraising target?

There is no set fundraising target however we are unable to continue providing our specialist care without your generous support and donations. You can fundraise £145 as a team which could fund a Sue Ryder Nurse for the day or donate £21 to cover an hour of nursing care.

Where can I set up an online fundraising page to help raise vital funds?

We have a Walk to Remember JustGiving campaign where you can set up your fundraising page from. Doing so from here will automatically link your page to our overall target. When you are on the campaign page you will just need to click the Orange “Start Fundraising” button on the right.

What else should I add to my fundraising page?

Did you know fundraisers who add a profile picture tend to raise 15% more than those who don’t. It’s also a nice opportunity (if you wish to do so) to personalise your page and share your motivations or reasons for taking part. Finally set yourself a target, those that do tend to raise more, you’ll be surprised how many friends will want you to get there. You can always increase this at any time if you wish.

Where should I share my fundraising page?

A great start would be to share this with your close family, friends and colleagues to get some initial donations going. You’re then ready to share this across all your social media channels, through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I can only see Sue Ryder as an option on JustGiving, how do I support my local Hospice?

Please choose Sue Ryder as the chosen charity so your funds come directly to us. To support a specific hospice please confirm the name of the hospice in your Title or opening line so we can allocate these correctly for you.

Can I make a donation if I’m unable to fundraise?

If you are unable to fundraise we would really appreciate any donations and these can be made on our campaign page: www.justgiving.com/campaign/virtualwalktoremember. After clicking through to our campaign page you will see the “Donate” button on the right. Every pound will help us be there when it matters for patients and their loved ones.

Will Sue Ryder receive 100% of all funds from JustGiving?

Yes. Sue Ryder will receive 100% of your fundraising and gift aid. JustGiving used to take a fee (5%) but this is no longer the case after JustGiving withdrew this back in 2019. Donations to support JustGiving are now optional for anyone sponsoring you.

Event day

Is there an official start time?

No, although our official Walk date is Saturday 17th October there is no official start time on the day. You can walk whenever you like and again make it personal to you should you wish.

Where should we walk?

Make it a Walk to Remember by planning your route around a favourite place close to you and your loved one’s heart. We kindly ask that due to restrictions on visitors at our hospice sites, we are recommending that you don't use these locations for your walks in line with government guidelines and our own charity policy.

Can I walk my distance over multiple days?

Yes you can walk 5k or 10k over as many days as you like in October, the aim being to finish on or before the 17th which is our official walk day. If you need to walk after the 17th this is absolutely fine, however we ask you to aim to complete your walk in October in order for us to announce our overall fundraising total.

What should I wear on my walk?

Please make sure you dress according for both the weather and terrain.

Who should I call in the event of an emergency?

As per the event terms and conditions, Sue Ryder accepts no liability for any injury caused to any participant.. Therefore in the event of an emergency please call the emergency services and they will be able to assist you.

Post-event

Is it too late to donate?

No, all donations are gratefully received and can still be made by visiting our campaign page: www.justgiving.com/campaign/virtualwalktoremember

Can I take my sponsorship money into my local Sue Ryder shop?

No – please call your local hospice or email walktoremember@sueryder.org and we will advise the best way for you to get this to us. Our shops as you may be aware are closed and will be reopening slowly under a controlled environment.

Can I send offline sponsorship money to my local hospice?

We kindly ask you to avoid delivering this in person to any of our hospices but you can of course send a cheque clearly stating your name, address and that the funds were raised from taking part in Walk to Remember. Don’t forget if you have used any sponsorship forms to include these so we can claim the relevant gift aid. Due to restrictions in place we would encourage paying this online where possible or using our JustGiving campaign page. If you are unsure please contact us on walktoremember@sueryder.org and we will provide you with the relevant information.

Can I pay my sponsorship online via a bank transfer?

Where can I share my photos from my Walk to Remember?

You can share your photos via our Walk to Remember Facebook group or email them to us at walktoremember@sueryder.org.

Will you be hosting future virtual walks or events like this again in the future?

Yes, we are looking to hold future Walk to Remember events in March 2021.
