What to expect on the day
Get involved in this year's event - which is set to be bigger and better than ever - and have a great day out at Wetherby Races while helping us at Sue Ryder continue providing care to people when they need us the most. And with our new partnership with Poundland we have some great £1 offers to help people get involved in 2020.
Mascots first take part in the Mascot Parade in the official parade ring where punters can place their bets on their favourites. A number of prizes are up for grabs during the Mascot Parade, including Best Mascot on parade.
Following the parade, there is a one-minute mascot warm-up lead by 'Pound Hound' from our sponsors Poundland before the race itself.
Mascots will be sent two complimentary race day passes (one for themselves and another for a helper) and can purchase unlimited extra half-price tickets (if ordered in advance) for supporters, colleagues and friends – making the event an ideal corporate, community group or family day out.
Under-16s get in free if accompanied by an adult.
The sooner you sign up, the more time your organisation will be promoted, so why not grab your credit card and sign up now?
Interested, but no mascot? Get in touch!
We have a ‘stable’ of mascots that can be 'adopted' for the day on a first-come-first-served basis.
Keen to fundraise for another charity?
We know that many good causes have mascots so we are allowing them to compete in the Mascot Gold Cup and keep all the sponsorship money they raise, provided they pay the £40 entry fee to Sue Ryder.

Is there an age limit to take part?
Our terms and conditions state participants should be 16 but in the past we have made exceptions to this if a disclaimer is signed so do get in touch.
How will I receive my two complimentary tickets?
These will be mailed out in the participants' pack.
What time do I need to be there?
The Wetherby Racecourse and Conference Centre gates open at noon, please head for the Paddock Grandstand Entrance. The mascot parade starts at around 1:10pm and we ask Mascots to arrive at least 30 minutes before that to sign in and get ready. The first horse race is usually at around 2:20pm and then the Mascot Gold Cup is around 2:35pm.
I don’t have a costume but really want to take part...
No problem - we have a stable of mascots that you can choose from, all of who would love a run out with you at the worlds largest mascot race. If you email firstname.lastname@example.org, we can send you the catalogue of available mascots.
May I compete but fundraise for a charity other than Sue Ryder?
Yes, provided you pay the £40 entry fee to Sue Ryder, you can then keep all the sponsorship money you raise and donate this to an alternate cause should you wish. You must let us know when you enter if you want to do this.
What are the full terms and conditions of this event?

All participants agree to act at all times in a safe manner and so as to not put at risk the health and safety of others.
All participants shall behave in a reasonable and appropriate manner and do nothing which might bring Sue Ryder, the Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers, the sponsors or the venue into disrepute.
The organisers may disqualify entrants who, in the organiser’s opinion, fail to comply with any of the Rules of Entry. In addition participants will be automatically disqualified if they:
- Act in a dangerous manner at any time before, during or after the race
- Fail to start from the designated starting point or at the appointed time

Any mascot found to be in breach of any of the foregoing will also be barred from any future events organised by Sue Ryder.
Sue Ryder shall be responsible for determining all aspects of the race. This shall include the interruption, delay or abandonment of the race or the race meeting, the number of runners in the race, the number of fences in the race, the location of the start and finish of the race and the degree to which mascots will be handicapped.
Sue Ryder reserves the right to amend the rules at its discretion in the interests of the race, the participants and the spectators.
The decisions of Sue Ryder are made in good faith and will be final in all cases. Sue Ryder will in no circumstances enter into any discussion about any aspect of any decisions made.
Any mascot costume which is completely professionally made will not be permitted to enter the Best Turned Out homemade mascot competition. If large feet or any other cumbersome items are part of a participant’s official costume they must be worn in the race.
Mascots will be handicapped by the official handicapper who will be using our handicapping system. This will involve placing each mascot into one of 4 or more bands dependent on how difficult the costume appears to run in. The start time of the race will differ slightly for each group in order to make the race a fairer contest.
Participants are not allowed to compete in spiked running shoes or any other footwear that may be deemed to be unsafe by Sue Ryder.
Sue Ryder reserves the right to disqualify any mascot whose costume it believes to be unsafe and/or inappropriate.
By including your details in your entry you are consenting to Sue Ryder using them for the purposes of this event.
