A 65-year-old woman from Henlow is celebrating this month after winning £1,000 a month for a year.
Lyn Furr entered the Sue Ryder Lottery Super Draw in April after one of her friends, who works at Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice, interested her in buying a ticket.
A month later, Lyn’s same friend rang to share the good news that Lyn was the holder of the winning ticket following an independent draw.
A life-changing phone call
“I was at work when I received the call telling me that I had won," Lyn says. "At first I thought it was a joke; I didn’t think it was real. Things like this happen to other people - not to me. I was so convinced that it was a wind-up, hospice staff had to ring me back to reassure me that I had really won!
“I went home later that day and looked at the ticket, which I had stuck on my fridge. I asked my housemate to double-check the ticket number for me and when I realised it really was true - I had won - I burst into tears and we had a cuddle. Then we had something fizzy to celebrate!”
"I was having a bad day - but didn't that change!"
The win couldn’t have come at a better time for Lyn.
“I was having a really bad day when I received the phone call telling me I’d won the Sue Ryder Lottery Super Draw," she adds. "But didn’t that change! The win will help me pay my mortgage off earlier and it will allow me to follow my life-long dream of working with animals too. I can change my career now and do something I have always wanted to do.”
Lyn shares: “The reason I entered the Sue Ryder Lottery was because I wanted to give a donation to help fund the amazing care which is given at my local Sue Ryder St John’s Hospice. I never in a million years thought I would actually win!”
The Sue Ryder Lottery Super Draw, which was drawn on Friday 31st May, offered winning players £1,000 a month or a £10,000 lump sum with second, third and fourth prizes of £1,000, £100 and £50 respectively, as well as 10 prizes of £100 and 200 runner-up prizes of £5.
