Zoey's story

In 2020, Zoey’s younger sister and mum died within two months of each other, followed by the death of her stepdad not long after. She talks about how Sue Ryder's Online Community gave her a supportive space to talk with others and share her grief.

I went from having a family one minute, to having next to nothing left.

Zoey says: “I went from having a family one minute, to having next to nothing left. It hit me a lot harder than I expected it to.”

Then Zoey found the Sue Ryder Online Bereavement Community. “I was welcomed with open arms – I felt so supported, it was absolutely incredible. When you're going through something like that you feel so alone in it that you don't feel that somebody else could be going through the same.”

It's okay to feel lost. But if you do reach out to Sue Ryder, you are guaranteed to find somebody that’s feeling the same way as you.

“On other sites in the past I’d really poured my heart out and no one had written back. But at Sue Ryder you get an answer every time.

“It's okay to feel lost. But if you do reach out to Sue Ryder, you are guaranteed to find somebody that’s feeling the same way as you. And although that won't take the grief away, it will make it better because you can go through it together.

“When I first joined it was to help myself, but then it became more about helping other people. If there's someone on there and I read their post I’ll respond and say ‘I've been there too and it does get better.”
