Health and happiness

Your wellbeing matters to us. On this page you’ll find information and resources to help make sure you’re healthy and happy during your time as a volunteer with Sue Ryder.

Mental health awareness

It is very important to consider the emotional wellbeing of ourselves and others. We have lots of help, guidance and support available.

This short video offers an introduction to mental health awareness.

Three ways to seek support

Below, we have three ways you can seek support if you need to. Remember, you are not alone. Be kind to yourself. Make the most of our resources and let someone know if you’re struggling and need some help.

Volunteer Inclusion Passport

Our Volunteer Inclusion Passport is available to all volunteers. This is a document that helps you tell us about anything impacting your life or your role as a volunteer. This could be things like:

  • a health condition
  • an injury
  • caring responsibilities
  • neurodivergence
  • your home life
  • any other personal matters that affect your day-to-day life

If you choose to fill out an Inclusion Passport, your line manager will use it to chat with you about any support or adjustments we can put in place to help you while volunteering.

To find out more, or complete an Inclusion Passport, please speak to your line manager.

You can also download the guide below for more information.

Financial wellbeing

Here, we have guidance, advice and further resources to help you manage your financial wellbeing.

Our financial wellbeing guidance

We have created five new financial wellbeing guidance sheets, which you are welcome download, or print and keep. These cover the following topics:

More financial support and advice

If you need further support, help and advice is available from a range of external organisations, including:

  • MoneyHelper  – free and impartial help with money, on topics ranging from how to make a budget, to how to manage different bills and payments.
  • Citizens Advice – guidance around debt and money, including advice around mortgage problems, debt management and how to get your finances back on track.
  • StepChange's Online Debt Advice Tool - Receive debt support by email or text, helping you take the first steps towards resolving money concerns you have, with a budget plan and personal action plan.

Grief and bereavement support

At Sue Ryder, we believe grief deserves better. We want the nation to open up about death and grief. Together we can make sure no one faces death or grief alone.

Read more about our grief and bereavement support services and how you can access them.

If you are experiencing grief or loss or any kind, please speak to your line manager or Volunteer Coordinator, who can support you in your role.

Period products pilot

In June 2025, we launched a period products pilot at Sue Ryder, thanks to our Women and Non-Binary Individuals Network.

During the pilot, free period products are available to our staff and volunteers in bathrooms at:

  • Shops in territories 9300 and 9450
  • Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice (including the Theale office)
  • Sue Ryder South Oxfordshire Palliative Care Hub
  • Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and on-site shop
  • Northampton warehouse and office
  • London office.

We hope that this pilot will last for 3 months, until the end of September 2025. However, the end date will depend on our stock levels.
