The Joy of Volunteering: Daniel’s Story

When Daniel first heard about volunteering at a Sue Ryder shop, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Read Daniel's story to discover how volunteering boosted his confidence, gave him a sense of pride, and made him feel part of something bigger.

A person stands behind a shop counter. They are wearing glasses and have short hair. They smile gently towards the camera.

Becoming a volunteer

When Daniel first heard about volunteering at the new Sue Ryder shop in St Helens, he wasn’t sure what to expect. Referred through his employment training advisor, he joined a taster session before the shop even opened. Daniel said: “I was really nervous at first. I wasn’t sure I’d fit in or be able to do the job”.

But from day one, Daniel was welcomed into a supportive team. The managers and other volunteers helped him learn the ropes and made him feel comfortable from the start.

Volunteering quickly became more than just a way to give back; it became a place for Daniel to build confidence and develop new skills.

I’ve learned so much in such a short time. A few months ago, I could barely talk to anyone. Now, I can have full conversations with people.

Daniel said, “I was originally looking at administration jobs but since volunteering at Sue Ryder I have broadened my search. I’m really enjoying working on the retail side. It also really does feel great because I know that I’m contributing to a good cause.”

Growing in confidence

Small achievements, like selling his first lottery ticket, gave Daniel moments of pride and satisfaction. “I connected with a customer and helped support a charity. That moment made me realise I could do this,” he said.

Over time, volunteering has boosted Daniel’s confidence beyond the shop. He said: “I feel better in everyday life now. I’m more outgoing, I can start conversations, and I’m more willing to try new things. Volunteering has really helped me grow as a person.”

For Daniel, volunteering has been about connection, learning, and personal growth.

It’s uplifting, helpful, and fun. Even though it might seem small at first, the experience can really change you and make a difference to others.

He has discovered that volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about building confidence, developing practical skills, and feeling part of a community.

He hopes his story inspires others to take that first step. “Even small achievements make you feel proud and part of something bigger. I’ve grown so much in just a few months, it’s incredible to see how far I’ve come. Give it a try; you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.”
