Wheatfields Hospice education and training

Wheatfields Education Team provides high quality education and training for our own staff and volunteers, and for external colleagues in the wider community.

Our staff are expected to learn and develop their skills and knowledge in order to perform to their full potential.

To achieve this, we actively promote a culture of continuous development and lifelong learning. We provide a selection of learning opportunities including communication skills, advance care planning, symptom management, bereavement care, end of life care training and practical clinical skills training.

Various members of the multi-disciplinary team at Wheatfields Hospice assist with the training provision contributing their expert subject knowledge. All our training is based on latest evidence base or best practice ensuring quality is assured.

We are also partners in the Leeds Managed Clinical Network for Palliative and End of Life Care, working closely with other providers of specialist palliative care in Leeds in leading and delivering education and training across the city. In addition, we are employer and delivery partners in the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Excellence Centre working with employers in West Yorkshire from the NHS, independent and voluntary sectors to coordinate and implement high-quality skills programmes for support workers.

Human rights in end of life care workshops

We have delivered several workshops at Wheatfields Hospice as part of our human rights training programme, 'What Matters to Me: a Human Rights Approach to End of Life Care'.

These workshops covered an introduction to the Human Rights Act and the key Articles that relate most to end of life care, how human rights and their application provides a framework to help ethical decision-making, and how to raise human rights issues.

We work in partnership with local universities to provide high-quality placements for medical students, GP registrars, student nurses, student nursing associates, student allied health professionals and student social workers on placement as part of their professional training.
