Our statement on the UK energy cap rise and the effect on terminally ill people
Our Chief Executive, James Sanderson, comments following the announcement of an energy cap rise for England, Wales and Scotland, in January 2025.
The UK energy regulator Ofgem has announced the latest Energy Cap rates which will see the price most households pay for gas and electricity rising by 1% on average from 1 January 2025.
James Sanderson, Chief Executive of Sue Ryder, said:
“With ice and snow on the ground across much of the UK, terminally ill people will already be feeling the devastating effects of cold weather on their symptoms. The announcement of the Energy Price Cap rise for January will strike a further blow to their stretched finances and quality of life, leaving many uncertain of how they will keep warm over winter.
“The sad truth is that cold weather could mean many terminally ill people die before they should. They desperately need more support through social energy tariffs and compensation schemes to help with the increased costs of keeping their home warm and running the essential medical devices, they rely on.”
More information and support
When someone is dying, it can put a lot of financial pressure on them and those who care for them. In the last year of life, most people are eligible to receive at least some benefits. They may also be able to access charitable grants or other forms of support.
