Local Sue Ryder hospice praised by CQC

24 Nov 2025

Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, which provides care for people in Bradford, Airedale and Craven, has been rated Good overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors highlighting 'exceptional’ practice in Kindness, Compassion and Dignity.

Treating people with kindness and compassion

The national regulator awarded the rating following a two‑day inspection of the Oxenhope‑based hospice’s expert palliative and end‑of‑life care services in September earlier this year, including its inpatient unit, community nursing, day therapies and wellbeing support.

In their published report, inspectors praised Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice as “exceptional at maximising the effectiveness of people’s care and treatment by assessing and reviewing their health, care, wellbeing and communication needs with them.”

They also noted that staff were “exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion and in how they respected people’s privacy and dignity”, helping patients and families feel welcomed, supported and cared for at every stage.

CQC praises strong partnerships and community-led improvements

The CQC recognised the hospice’s strong partnership working with NHS Trusts, GPs and community services, which enables people to receive earlier support, live well for longer and, in many cases, avoid hospital admission.

Inspectors also highlighted how feedback from the community is listened to and acted upon, such as redecorating the ‘Room to Reflect’ into a welcoming multifaith space.

Our response to the report

Sarah Bottomley, Regional Director at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, said:

“This result is thanks to the commitment, dedication and hard work of all our volunteers and staff, who do all they can to be there when it matters for local families. And it is thanks to their passion for providing expert and compassionate palliative and end‑of‑life care.”

“Achieving a ‘Good’ rating is a proud moment for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice. It reflects the passion and expertise of our staff and volunteers, and demonstrates the vital role we play for families across West Yorkshire. On behalf of everyone at Sue Ryder, I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and share just how proud we are of this achievement.”

The report also shared examples of staff going above and beyond to support patients and families, from helping people celebrate weddings and anniversaries, to enabling a bed‑bound patient to attend a cricket match, and creating personalised therapies such as a bespoke aromatherapy oil using a patient’s favourite beer.

Hiedi Stokes, from Bradford, shared how the staff went above and beyond when her wife Sally Nicholson was cared for at the hospice at the end of her life:

“Sal had a single bed in the hospice, and I had a reclining chair so I could stay near to her, but when you are a married couple who are used to sleeping next to each other every night, it felt awful just hanging on the edge of the bed.

The staff insisted that they find a double bed and set one up in the room so I could lie next to Sal and hold her hand. It meant everything to us
