What is Starlight Hike Your Way?
Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Your Way is a fundraising challenge that encourages you to complete a 10k walk at a time and location of your choice, during October. You can complete your chosen activity on any day or time throughout October. By taking part, you’ll be joining the wider Sue Ryder Starlight Hike community, helping to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder’s expert end-of-life care and grief support.
Where can I take part?
You can take part anywhere, just choose a safe and suitable environment. This might include local paths or parks. Please ensure your chosen route or activity is safe and appropriate for you.
What distance do I need to complete?
The suggested distance is a 10k walk. However, it is your opportunity to do Starlight Hike Your Way, at a distance and location that works best for you. You can walk, wheelchair travel, step count or take on another appropriate physical activity.
Do I have to complete the challenge at night?
No. While the event is inspired by the traditional Starlight Hike, for Your Starlight Hike Your Way you can choose the day and time that works best for you. While you can walk at any time, we would encourage people to take part during daylight hours where possible for your safety. If you are walking at night, please follow the safety guidance provided in your walker pack.
Is fundraising compulsory?
Fundraising is encouraged, but not compulsory. Sue Ryder understands that everyone’s circumstances are different and warmly welcomes all participation.
Our suggested sponsorship target is £100 per adult, which could pay for three hours of expert care from a Sue Ryder Nurse. But we encourage you to raise as much as you can and we’ll support you every step of the way. By taking part and raising sponsorship you’ll help ensure more people receive the expert care and support they deserve.
How do I fundraise?
Once you’ve registered, you’ll be able to set up a JustGiving page and share it with friends, family and colleagues. We can also provide:

How much are you hoping will be raised?
We’re hoping to raise £10,000 from this year’s Starlight Hike Your Way event throughout October.
How will I receive my t-shirt and medal?
Once your fundraising reaches £60, your t-shirt and medal will either be posted or can be collected from the Thorpe Hall retail shop.
How will I receive my dedication panel?
You will receive a printable dedication panel in your Walker pack.
Can children take part?
Yes. Participants under the age of 18 must:
- have permission from a parent or legal guardian
- be appropriately supervised at all times
The supervising adult is responsible for the child’s safety throughout their participation.
Can I take part if I don’t complete my distance/activity?
Your wellbeing always comes first. If you’re unable to complete your chosen activity, you’re welcome to:
- stop early
- adapt your activity
- complete a shorter distance
There is no penalty for doing what feels right for you.
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable, supportive footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, high-visibility or reflective items if walking at night and a torch. Always dress appropriately for your chosen location and conditions.
Will photos be shared?
We love seeing your Starlight Hike photos. You’re encouraged to take your own and share them in our Starlight Hike Facebook group and on social media using #StarlightHike and tagging Sue Ryder. Some participants may also be featured in post-event marketing or fundraising communications (see publicity terms below).
Can I take part in an in-person Starlight Hike?
Yes, you can find all our in-person Starlight events on our Starlight Hike hub page.
How are donations spent?
When you make a donation to Sue Ryder, your money will be spent wherever the need is greatest, giving us the flexibility to provide our services across the UK.
What are the full event terms and conditions?
These are available on our website (see accordion below) and on request, and must be read before entering so you are fully aware of the event terms and conditions prior to registering.
