Sara-Jane chronicled her walking adventure in photographs, which she then sold as a calendar to raise funds.
A Bedfordshire woman completed a 1,000-mile walking challenge in 2017, raising over £1,900 for her local St John’s Hospice along the way.
At the start of the year, Sara-Jane Davies, who works in the payroll department at NGA Human Resources in Bedford, signed up to take part in Country Walking magazine's #Walk1000Miles challenge in memory of her aunt, Jean Charles, and to raise money for St John’s.
“I'm no athlete or adrenaline junkie, so you won't find me running a marathon, or jumping out of a plane. But one thing I can do is walk,” said Sara-Jane who lives in Westoning.
In memory of Aunty Jean
“August 2017 marked 30 years since we lost my Aunty Jean," explained Sara-Jane. "She was one of the kindest, gentlest and most selfless people I have known and, even now, after all this time, we all miss her very much.
“Aunty Jean spent her final few weeks at St John's Hospice in Moggerhanger," she continued, "a place that provides incredible care, compassion and support to its patients and their families.
“As the years have gone by, I have known others who have needed St John's in their darkest and saddest times. This fundraising is also in their memory.”
Her adventure in pictures
While out with her walking boots across the county, Sara-Jane also took plenty of photos, which she added to her Facebook page to keep followers updated with the progress of the challenge.
To bolster her fundraising, Sara-Jane produced a calendar showcasing her photography skills that was sold to her social media followers and friends.
“When I took the first step on my first walk back on 2nd January 2017, I had no doubt that I would reach my target by the end of the year,” added the 43 year old.
“What I hadn't reckoned on, though, was quite how much I would fall in love with walking.
“335 days and 1,000 miles later, I am fitter, stronger, healthier and happier than I can ever remember being.”
