Inspired by a combination of the London 2012 Olympics and the incredible care friends had received from Sue Ryder, Mark decided to conquer a triathlon - and surpassed his own expectations.
"I have always wanted to take part in a triathlon since I was inspired by the Brownlee brothers in the build-up to London 2012. I knew I wasn't the strongest swimmer or runner, but I was pretty good on the bike, and I had done physically challenging events in the past for charity, such as the 3 Peaks Challenge, so I decided I would challenge myself to complete a triathlon before I turned 40.
"I saw there was a triathlon based in St Neots, Cambridgeshire, with Sue Ryder as the supported charity partner. I have friends that received the best care and treatment possible from Sue Ryder and knew from their experiences that this was an amazing cause and that I just had to raise as much money as possible.
"I set myself the target to raise £200, but through the generosity of friends, family and colleagues, I have surpassed this amount. I will continue to push myself to complete these physical challenges and I hope to raise more money for Sue Ryder in the future."
Race day itself
"I was extremely nervous going into the race as I definitely felt that I hadn't prepared well enough to complete it in the 60-minute target time I'd set myself.
"The swim was the most draining for me as, although I am a strong swimmer, it was more physically demanding than I first thought. I plodded on and completed this in just over 14 minutes.
"The cycling was my favourite part and, although my legs were like concrete after the swim, I managed to complete the 10km distance in just over 20 minutes.
"The final leg was the run, which I found very tough as I think I'd just run out of energy! However, I managed to just about get around the course in 15:41.
"These times, along with the transition times, saw me complete my first triathlon in a very pleasing time of 53:30. I really loved it and am already planning my next triathlon!"
