Sue Ryder was the first charity to pioneer reclaiming Gift Aid on goods donated to its 350 shops across the country. The charity has now reached the £10m mark, as well as bringing the total number of donors acquired through the scheme to 500,000.
Since the charity first launched Gift Aid in its shops in 2006, income generated through the tax efficiency scheme has seen a constant growth year on year from 19% of donated goods in 2007/08, where the income generated by Gift Aid was £1,061,737 to 41% by 2009/10 bringing Gift Aid income to £2,557,000.
Julie Beames, Business Development Manager at Sue Ryder, commented: “In this tough economic climate it is vital for the charity to explore innovative ways to increase income as well as grow numbers of donors. The Retail Gift Aid scheme is not only helping Sue Ryder to increase the value of its donated goods, but it is also providing a valuable source of information about our retail supporters.
"This audience may know Sue Ryder mainly for our charity shops, but they don't necessarily have an in-depth knowledge of our work within their local communities. Moving forward, we want to engage more with our retail donors and involve them in other aspects of our work through volunteering, taking part in fundraising activities or becoming regular donors."
