New charity shop in Leeds attracts hundreds of customers

14 November 2011

Sue Ryder opened its first charity shop in Meanwood on Thursday (Thu 10 November) and welcomed hundreds of customers throughout the day raising over £4,000 for the charity. The new shop in the North Side Retail Park on Stonegate Road in Meanwood sells furniture, clothes, books, DVDs, wrapping paper as well as new musical instruments and the Hickleton Collector Dolls’ House and miniatures range.

Glynn Taylor, Business Manager for Sue Ryder, said: “Our charity shops play a vital role in raising funds for the charity. Sue Ryder provides end of life and long-term care for people with complex care and support needs and run a number of hospices and neurological care centres across the country, including Wheatfields hospice in Headingley, Leeds.

Services provided by Wheatfields Hospice are free to the point of delivery for the people who need them most, but we need to raise more than 60% in voluntary income to continue to provide those services for the local community. Money raised through our shops represents a vital source of funds.

We are very pleased with our new store and the opening day was a great success. This is due to the many hours of work of both Sue Ryder staff and volunteers who pulled together to have the shop opened on time. We had many comments from customers about what a good shopping experience they had with us”.

With Christmas fast approaching, the new charity shop will offer people the chance to browse through a wide range of good quality products to find that perfect present for a family member or friend without breaking the bank.

Sue Ryder is recruiting volunteers to help with everything from sorting and preparing stock to merchandising and sales and is appealing for people to donate good quality clothing, books and bric-a-brac.  For more information on the new shop and how you can help please call 0113 224 2641 or email suzanne.rutter@sueryder.org
