Twenty teams battled it out in a bid to raise money and awareness for Sue Ryder's international work, in particular health and social care projects across Europe and southern Africa.
The night saw some spectacular play in a crescendo towards the evening’s main event, which saw the winners of the cup, The Pathology Group play against a team of Ex Premiership legends including Kerry Dixon, Steve Claridge, Steve Lomas, Phil Babb and Bob Bolder. Despite losing the game, the legends were delighted to offer their support to the event. Claridge said:
“Me and Kerry were at a charity tournament the other day in Derby. I try and go to as many as possible, as it’s good to give something back. Doing it through the game is even better. It’s a shame we only get eight minutes out there! Once you’ve played you want to play more, but it’s for a great cause.”
Dixon pre-empted a tough encounter before the match: “A lot of people like to see ex pros play to see if they’ve still got it – so the pressure’s really going to be on. I'm good friends with the guys at Sue Ryder, and it’s a pleasure to be here.”
The atmosphere was electric throughout the evening, with the low-lying dome doing its bit to contain the air of excitement throughout. All in all it was a spectacular night, rounded off with the awards ceremony at the O2’s Water Margin Bar who, it must be said, put on quite a spread. The hungry footballers tucked in, happy in the knowledge they had done their bit to help those less fortunate around the world.
A feast for legends, some might say.
