BG Group - Community Voluteering Day at Nettlebed Hospice

BG group volunteersIt was a pleasure to be introduced to Penny Nicholls and her colleague Paul Broom of BG Group, when they came to visit Nettlebed Hospice to talk about potential volunteering opportunities for their colleagues. Sitting in the grand Fleming Room of the Hospice, we learn’t more about BG Group and the types of activities that they like to get involved in. From this information we were able to allocate specific projects that we felt would be most appropriate for them. After giving them a tour of the project areas, they decided that they would like to go ahead and organise a volunteering day which was set for the 17th June.

It was fantastic to see over 20 people from BG Group participating in the Community Volunteering Day. Everyone was very friendly and feeling positive about the projects ahead and the weather stayed dry and warm for everyone.

The day started with tea and coffee and an explanation of the Hospice and its background. Groups were then allocated various projects ranging from clearing out and tidying the fundraising basement room, stripping wall paper from one of the estate cottages and also sanding and painting the DIY shed and garage doors in our sales of donated goods areas.

Everyone worked extremely hard and we were delighted with the results of the day. We genuinely appreciated their commitment to the projects and really enjoyed their company. They were all really proactive and dedicated to completing their individual activities. We thank them wholeheartedly for their support and really look forward to welcoming them back in the future.

This type of volunteering really makes a difference to us and we can put a financial value on this type of activity. It’s a genuine cost benefit and we are pleased that we can offer these types of activities, to corporates, as team building and networking opportunities.

Penny Nicholls comments ‘This is the third year that Group Finance at BG Group has arranged a Community Day, and it was decided that we would like to choose a Cancer/Hospice charity to help this year.

It has been a good opportunity for the members of Group Finance to team build and network with the colleagues they may not work with on a day to day basis. The feedback from the team that went to Sue Ryder on 17th June was positive and they all found it enjoyable and good fun. We aim to look at volunteering again at Nettlebed and will be planning a project in the autumn for next year. It's fantastic to find a charity that has a range of projects for us to choose from and who understood our needs for the day. The team enjoyed it so much and would recommend others to support this worthwhile charity.'
