Bargain hunters keen for some budget-friendly retail therapy will be in their element on Friday January 20 when the doors of the Whiteknights Retail Centre shop open at 11am.
Sue Ryder business manager Sandy Lunn said: “We are so excited to be opening our Shinfield Road store, which is located in a prime position at the heart of the Whiteknights Retail Centre next to Tesco. Why not pop in and bag a bargain and support a vital local charity at the same time?
“Whether you’re looking for handbags, books, music DVDs or even a chest of drawers or three piece suite, Sue Ryder’s Shinfield Road shop is the place to be, with proceeds going to help the charity to continue to provide local hospice care in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire through Duchess of Kent House in Reading, Nettlebed Hospice near Henley, and community services in Newbury and Wokingham.”
Led by shop manager Richard Janko, the Sue Ryder staff and volunteer team will be on hand to show shoppers around the store, which will be packed to the rafters with a wide range of second hand items as well as quality new goods, including art equipment, guitars and dolls’ houses. There will also be a dedicated furniture section, donated by kind-hearted people from across the borough.
Stock of household furniture, from cabinets and desks to beds and wardrobes, will also be supplied through the charity's innovative partnership with the re3 Household Waste Recycling Centres at Smallmead, Reading and Longshot Lane Bracknell. These facilities are run by the Waste Recycling Group (WRG) for Reading, Wokingham and Bracknell Forest Borough Councils.
Staff at these facilities work with site users and select anything that looks suitable for reuse and sale for collection by Sue Ryder. This can then be supplied to the nearby Shinfield Road or the Sandhurst Sue Ryder shops to be checked, and then put on sale to raise valuable funds for people in need of specialist care.
Money raised from the shop will help Sue Ryder to continue to provide local expert and compassionate care to people living with conditions such as cancer and respiratory, cardiac or renal diseases.
Sandy Lunn said: “This is a really exciting retail development for Sue Ryder that will raise much needed money for local hospice services. There is something for everyone and every home and I am sure shoppers will be delighted by the exceptional quality, value and wide range of goods we will be selling.
“We are recruiting volunteers to help with everything from sorting and preparing stock to merchandising and sales and are also appealing for people to donate good quality clothing, books and bric-a-brac.
