84 years of caring for your local community

21 November 2011

A group of volunteers received recognition for their invaluable support when a special event was held at Sue Ryder Holme Hall on Wednesday 16 November 2011.

Senior management team across the charity including Health and Social Care Director Steve Jenkin celebrated a group of 16 volunteers who together have clocked up 84 years of volunteering for Sue Ryder.

Karl Roberts, Care Centre Manager at Sue Ryder Holme Hall, commented: “Locally Sue Ryder Holme Hall has been providing high quality care for over 32 years supporting people with complex care and support needs living with conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone disease, acquired brain injury and Huntington’s disease.

Our staff have an in-depth knowledge of caring for people with neurological conditions and are dedicated to providing 24 hour care and support for our residents’ needs. Alongside medical care and support, we also offer a wide range of specialist services and activities. These include: recreational therapy and the use of specially adapted IT equipment. Our aim is to help people in our care to live their lives to the full and stop seeing their disability as a barrier to lead a fulfilled life.

We wouldn’t be able to deliver the range of services we provide for the people who need them most without the priceless support of our volunteers. We have about 30 volunteers, 5 of which are high school students; helping with a variety of tasks, from supporting with use of computers, art, photography, music and crafts as well as supporting our residents on outings to market towns, seaside’s, local pubs and restaurants".

The event on Wednesday 16 November offered the perfect opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have supported the charity in the past few years. Ian Berriman, 64 from Goole, has been a Volunteer Driver for over two years, added: “I have never volunteered before joining Sue Ryder, but once I tried it, I soon realised that it was exactly what I was looking for. I really enjoy it. I like to think that in my own way I am able to help other people who due to their condition find it more difficult to be fully independent.

Every day we do different things. I may take residents to the theatre, to visit different places like for instance Blackpool or now that Christmas is approaching, we start going to Christmas markets”.
