Running in big American style in aid of Sue Ryder

12 August 2010

A new running group is planning a massed assault on the Great North Run to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder. The Airedale Dodgers is a new friendly running group based at Airedale General Hospital.

The group includes more than 40 runners amongst consultants, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, general practitioners, healthcare support workers and managers and will tackle the race on 19 September with the goal to raise at least £5,000 for the health and social care charity.

"The name came mainly from the idea that most of time you have to dodge people while running, but we also liked the idea of wearing American style baseball outfits", says Chris Healey, local consultant gastroenterologist who leads the team after an original idea of Andy Pettit, another consultant physician at Airedale Hospital.

"Our aims are multiple and mutual. The main goal is to raise as much money as possible for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, which is such an important part of our local community. Our team has improved networking within the hospital and helped to lift morale. We hope that other runners who have secured their own place at the race and are not running for any particular charity, will join the Sue Ryder running team.

The Dodgers have a Facebook site to help organise regular social runs and people can make a donation by visiting http://fundraising.suerydercare.org/AiredaleDodgers2010", Chris added.

Fiona Chilton, Running & Challenge Events Coordinator at Sue Ryder, said "We are delighted that the Airedale Dodgers have chosen to support Sue Ryder. They are doing a fantastic job and all their commitment and enthusiasm is lovely to see. Sue Ryder has a dedicated running support team and look after its runners from the sign-up to the finishing line.

Runners of all levels from beginners to advanced can join our team to ensure the day will be an unforgettable one".

All money raised through sponsorships help the charity continue to provide quality care for people living with end of life and long-term conditions including Cancer, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Huntington's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Motor Neurone Disease through its day care, respite, residential and community based services".

Chris added: "The Airedale Dodgers want to win by raising money; win by keeping fit; win by building teams and win by having a great time running.  Please support our cause, join the Sue Ryder team".
