In response to the issue of Terms of Reference for the Commission on the Funding of Care and Support (20 July 2010), Paul Woodward, Chief Executive at Sue Ryder, said:

21 July 2010

Sue Ryder welcomes today’s announcement on the establishment of a commission to determine an affordable and sustainable funding system for care and support, for all adults in England, both in the home and other settings (Terms of Reference for the Commission on the Funding of Care and Support, 20 July 2010).

We have long recognised the need to reform the current social care funding system to ensure equal access to quality care for all who need it.  In the current economic climate and with local authorities experiencing budget cuts, it is all the more important that proposals for a sustainable care system are acted upon and subsequent reform is fast-moving.

Sue Ryder’s service users tell us they want quality and affordable care, regardless of where they live.  Reform of the system should benefit those receiving care at all stages of their condition; from those who are able to work with assistance, to those who are nearing the end of their lives.

Joined-up health and social care services will be integral to the success of social care reform. We hope providers such as Sue Ryder will be consulted to share our expertise and knowledge on the current challenges faced by our service users who have both health and social care needs."
