Sue Ryder Volunteer Programme wins Award

We are delighted to announce that the Sue Ryder's prison volunteer programme won a ‘highly commended’ award at the Business in the Community Eastern region Awards for Excellence 2010 this Tuesday, 8 June.

The award show is the UK’s leading awards for corporate responsibility. It recognises businesses that are integrating responsible business practice into their mainstream operations and that deliver positive impacts to their local community.

The prison volunteer programme was commended for the help it gives our volunteers, aiding their first steps back into the community and improving their employment prospects. And, for the benefits that this initiative brings to our charity. Giving us valuable volunteering hours with 80% of Managers reporting that their shops have benefited financially from working with prison volunteers.

The impact that the programme has had on people management and motivation within the teams who are involved is very interesting. Staff have said that on a personal level over 60% have found working with prisoner volunteers to be rewarding and 30% feel it has strengthened their management skills.

When he joined us he increased takings by an amazing 600%. After five months he successfully applied for the position of assistant manager and was then promoted to manager'
