Following the Queen's speech (18 Nov 09), Vicky Knowles, Head of Policy and Special Projects at Sue Ryder said:
Sue Ryder welcomes the announcement of the Personal Care at Home Bill in the Queen’s Speech. We recognise the Bill as one step in a journey that must culminate in the creation of equitable and accessible care services.
We support the investment in prevention services to keep people in their homes for longer and to help people with first time care needs. We are also pleased those with Dementia and Parkinson’s disease have been highlighted as recipients of the new funded care. People living with neurological conditions often have complex needs; it is vital that care staff have knowledge and experience of providing appropriate care and support to them.
We were disappointed with the bias towards older people in the government’s recent green paper on social care. We hope the needs of younger people living with disabilities will be met through this Bill.
The Bill alone will not provide a solution to all of the problems people experience with the current care system; long-term measures also need to be progressed. The government’s vision for a National Care Service with clear entitlements should move forward as this Bill passes through Parliament.
