Sue Ryder harness volunteer power and ask for donated items

30 October 2009

In the run up to this year’s Make a Difference Day (31 October), Sue Ryder is appealing to people nationwide to pledge an hour of their time to support the charity through future volunteering or to donate a treasured item to their local Sue Ryder shop.

Volunteers are essential to Sue Ryder and help the charity make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people each year living with conditions including; Cancer, Stroke, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Dementia, Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Motor Neurone Disease.

With a deficit of £13million each year needed to continue to provide care at Sue Ryder’s 14 care centres, as well as community based services nationwide, donations of items to the charity’s shops are vitally important also.

Tracey Mealing, head of volunteering at Sue Ryder, said: “By pledging to support us through volunteering, people can not only help us raise vital funds but also gain experience to put on their CV.  And, if people don’t have any spare time to commit to volunteering, they can support us by donating items to our 350 shops.”

Tracey added, “For 359 days of the year we ask people to give us the best of what they no longer want, so on Make a Difference Day we’re raising the bar and asking people to part with a treasured item.

“We want as many people as possible to get involved, put something back into the community, and help make a difference.”

As well as utilising Make a Difference Day to recruit new volunteers, Sue Ryder is recognising its 6000-strong volunteer team to say thank you for their continued support.

Sue Ryder promotes over 600 volunteering roles on its website, the widest selection of volunteer roles within the volunteer charity sector, and can develop bespoke roles for people where relevant.  Volunteering roles include; all aspects of running a busy retail outlet from serving customers, sorting through donated items and creating window displays in one of Sue Ryder’s 350 shops; befriending people or flexing green fingers at one of its 14 care centres; helping the charity’s 17 fundraising teams host events and taking on roles to help the charity’s support services such as communications and human resources.
