Emerging Through A Battle With ME

15 October 2009

A truly inspirational individual, Moira Purver, 56 from Swanage in Dorset has submitted a piece to this year's Art Liberating Lives event. The Sculpture entitled Emerging is symbolic of her battle with and liberation from ME.

"Art Liberating Lives" has certainly been true for Moira. Moira became severely ill with ME in 2006, and for the next year and a half became progressively weaker, becoming housebound and then bedridden. A doctor friend recommended The Park Attwood Clinic (where they practice anthroposophical medicine). As part of her treatment, Moira was introduced to Art Therapy, and also started drawing outside therapy sessions. Moira was encouraged to make art a major part of her life to aid complete recovery which she whole heartedly embraced.

After leaving the clinic Moira continued with art therapy and realised her real love was sculpture. Through sculpture she has gained confidence which has grown as her health has returned - this has been a real turning point in her life. Art has opened up many new opportunities, friends and experiences for both Moira and her husband who is a great support to her. Moira is now able to walk for over 3 miles independently and regularly travels and takes part in exhibitions nationally.

Moira describes her piece, Emerging:

"I have done many sculptures now but this is the one that illustrates the freedom I now feel. The lady emerging from the sea is confident, energised, relaxed and comfortable in her environment.  She is emerging from more than just the sea.  People have asked if this piece (and not any others that I have done) is a self portrait.  It is not intentionally so, but it does show the new energy and freedom that I now feel."
