Recently graduated from Plymouth College of Art, with a first class Honours degree in Fine Art, Kasia Andrews from Devon has submitted two pieces to this year's Art Liberating Lives event. Kasia's paintings of her friend Kevin are significant as he has Cerebral palsy.
Kasia believes both paintings reflect the theme of liberation because they portray a person who some might consider, unworthy of being portrayed in art, simply because he has cerebral palsy. Kasia believes these paintings show a well needed liberation from the widely held opinion of what is considered beautiful i.e. a physically perfect person. Kasia is aware that the painting's do not actually obviously highlight Kevin's physical differences, however she wanted to show he is more than just a disabled person, illustrating his outlook on life.
An inspirational person, Kevin doesn't let his disability hold him back from living a full and interesting life. He is currently working with local artists to help prove disabled people are as worthy as able bodied people to be portrayed in art. As a result of Kevin working as an artist's model in life drawing classes, he was asked to take part in a dance with a professional dancer. Resulting from this he has been accepted on a dance theatre degree course.
Kasia commented "I think this is a fantastic thing for someone with such a severe disability to do and I don't think he would ever have thought he could have done this without the modelling, I think this just proves that art does indeed liberate lives!"
