5 October 2009
Art Liberating Lives is pleased to welcome back 2008 Young Artist Winner, Lucy Micallef. Since winning the award last year Lucy went on to complete her BA Hons in Fine Art with a fantastic 2.1 and is currently working on a project at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford promoting the Christmas Pantomime.
Lucy's mother was diagnosed with cancer and has now been clear for five years, inspiring Lucy's first submission to the Art Liberating Lives event in 2008. She feels creating artwork has a therapeutic effect and provides a form of escape not only for the artist but also the viewer.
Her submission for this year is aptly titled ‘Energy' and perfectly symbolises Lucy's passion for Art. About her piece, Lucy says "I like to experiment using bright colours which automatically flow onto the canvas layering the paint transparently. I use textured backgrounds as this gives depth and an individuality which characterises my personal images. Working in quick drying acrylics helps with the spontaneous process. I occasionally pause to analyse the composition balance and design of the three canvases without disturbing the fluidity. I think my piece works well as a triptych as the vibrancy is momentarily paused but comes together flowing into a bold abstract design. I paint for the sheer excitement and enjoyment of the process!"
Lucy is just about to embark on an MA in Visual Arts at Bradford College.
Good luck Lucy!
