Bronte Big K Mountain Bike Challenge a Huge Success

Over one three hundred and fifty mountain bikers took one of the three routes named after the Bronte sisters. Two hundred and ten riders took on the gruelling 31 mile Charlotte route which took riders from Oxenhope where the hospice is based over the Pennines towards Trawden, Wycoller and back through Stanbury. In the five year history of the event no-one had ever dipped below the 2 hour mark to complete the 31 miles but the good conditions helped four riders including first home Steven Grange beat this milestone time. The riders at the back of the field took almost five hours to finish but still had a great day and many raised additional sponsorship for the hospice in addition to the entry fee they paid. The 21 mile Emily route was a new addition to the event for 2009 and 52 riders took up this challenge with a further 71 people competing in he 11 mile Anne route designed for families. Sue Ryder Fundraiser Andrew Wood was delighted with the turnout which doubled that of the 2007 event. “To get almost 350 people out ‘Riding for Ryder’ in the sunshine was brilliant. We have already brought in around £10,000 with the entry fees and corporate sponsorship and the additional funds raised through participants raising sponsorship will swell this amount further. We’d like to thank our sponsors, Walkers Chartered Accountants and the Keighley Area Committee together with everyone who volunteered and took part on the day.
