Staff and volunteers from the Burnham Sue Ryder charity shop are hoping to raise money by taking to the waters … well almost. They will be staging a Row for Ryder event from Monday, August 24 until Sunday, August 30.
The team will be 'hypothetically' rowing from Burnham to Sue Ryder’s Nettlebed Hospice in Oxfordshire as part of the charity's Ride for Ryder summer fundraising appeal. They are borrowing a rowing machine from a local health club in Bridgwater to complete the 115 miles – and are encouraging local people to help them raise vital funds for Sue Ryder.
All money raised will go directly towards helping the charity care for people living with end of life and long-term conditions including cancer, stroke, acquired brain injuries, and Parkinson's Disease.
Assistant shop manager, Ann Davies, said: “We are appealing for local people and tourists to sponsor and take part in both challenges to help us raise as much money as we can for Sue Ryder.
“By supporting us in this way, we can provide four million hours of expert care each year and make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people.”
Shop manager Helen Roberts, added: “We are looking forward to this unusual fundraising event and are very grateful to the Exchange Health Club for supplying the rowing machine.
“Apart from our sponsored row, we also challenge people to take part in our 'fastest over 1500m', for which we have a prize for the winner and a boobie prize for the slowest.”
