Award wining artist, Arina Gordienko, has been chosen as the ‘face’ of Sue Ryder’s Art Liberating Lives 2009 event.
Arina’s artwork ‘Silence’, which features the artist’s face, is being used on all marketing materials to promote the healthcare charity’s annual nationwide art exhibition. Originally from Russia, Arina now lives in Battersea, London and exhibits her work in prestigious art galleries across the UK, Europe and America.
Arina submitted ‘Silence’ to Sue Ryder’s Art Liberating Lives’ 2008 event which was selected and displayed within the charity’s Art Liberating Lives exhibition at the prestigious Mall Galleries in December.
Asked why she supported Sue Ryder in this way, Arina explained: “I was attracted to use my art to support Sue Ryder as I know firsthand how important and valued quality end of life care is. I lost my brother, Alexander, to cancer. It was an incredibly difficult time, I loved him very much.”
Arina added, “When Sue Ryder asked if they could use my artwork to help promote this year’s Art Liberating Lives I was honoured. As well as supporting the charity to raise vital funds, it is my way to honour my brother’s memory.”
Describing the inspiration behind her artwork ‘Silence’, Arina said: “The ancient Egyptian queen Nefertiti provided the initial inspiration and then I used my own face as the model.” Manipulating her own image fascinates Arina who approached her modelling as a performance of an image out of history.
Arina added, “The monochrome palette lends anonymity and the red headpiece adds dramatic contrast.”
Ruth Peters, National Events Manager at Sue Ryder, said: “Arina’s ‘Silence’, was chosen to be included within this year’s Art Liberating Lives marketing materials as it’s a stunning, eye-catching piece of work and will hopefully support us to attract artists to take part in this year’s event.”
Arina studied at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and last year completed an MA in Fine Art at the Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts London. For more information on Arina and forthcoming exhibitions visit www.arinagordienko.com
