Lydia Peel was just 40 years old when she lost her battle against cancer. Family and friends are running in her memory to support our Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, who looked after beloved Lydia in her final days.

"We had no idea what Wheatfields Hospice would come to mean for us and the crucial role it would play in our lives," recalls Dan, Lydia's husband. "Lydia – my fantastic wife; amazing Mum to three sons; loving, caring daughter; sister; and friend – spent the last weeks of her life there.

"Lydia was the most incredible person you could wish to meet. At only 40 years old, she handled her diagnosis with the utmost dignity; her thoughts were never for herself, but always on those she loved and how things could be eased for them."

"Nothing was too much trouble for Sue Ryder staff"

In September of last year, the Peel family spent two weeks calling Wheatfields home.

"We lived there almost 24 hours a day," says Dan. "Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, day or night. This included very special attention given to our three-year-old son. From the minute we arrived at Wheatfields Hospice, everyone was so kind, gentle and loving toward her and the family.

"On one occasion, she was asked by the chef if there was anything she would like to eat," he remembers. "In her true style she replied: 'Sheep truffle cheese'. The next day, the chef had made a special trip to the local deli and there it was!"

"A place of safety and calm in times of great need"

"Family and friends would come and go in large numbers," continues Dan, "and were always made welcome.

"We now know and understand first hand how vitally important Wheatfields is to the area, and the place of safety and calm it proves to be in times of great need," he concludes.

A group of family and friends are taking part in the Great North Run this Sunday in an effort to raise much-needed funds in memory of Lydia.
