You TubeUpcycle Christmas
UK Healthcare charity Sue Ryder has teamed up with online craft and design community Folksy to set you the Upcycle Christmas challenge.
Upcycle Christmas is a competition to reclaim craft and 'upcycle' charity shop finds into hand crafted one-offs, which will be auctioned to the public in the run up to Christmas, in aid of Sue Ryder.
Come and get crafty!
To enter: register with Folksy to download your printable voucher. This will entitle you to claim your free bag of clothes from a Sue Ryder shop near so you can start being creative.
You can create anything you like and use anything you like. The only rules are that the items you use must be second-hand and only one bag of Sue Ryder donated stockcan be used per entrant. Accessories, homeware, fashion, furniture... you choose what you create from Sue Ryder Care stock.
Judging:
- The first is Wayne Hemingway MBE, who’s been at the forefront of British design for yonks, initially with Red or Dead and now moving into architecture and built environment (inc. sheds!). He was also instrumental in educating all of us daily with his slot on The Big Breakfast (you can see him on the penultimate show on this youtube clip).
- The second Louise Roe, the fashion journalist and ex BBC Clothes Show presenter who now guests on programmes like Britain’s Next Top Model. She’s like Mrs F.A.S.H.I.O.N. Follow Louise on twitter @louiseroe
- The third is India Knight (wikipedia), the columnist, champion of craft and making, and author of amongst other things The Thrift Book: How to Live Well and Spend Less (Foyles :: Amazon), one of the bibles here at Folksy Towers and core to the idea of Upcycling Christmas. - Fourth is Antoni & Alison, the quirky, British fashion label, famous for being daring and vibrant. There is always a humorous and slightly ironic side to each collection.
Our celebrity panel of judges will choose four artists/crafters work based on the following criteria:
- Creative use of materials
- Craft skills used
- Quality of work
- Appeal
- An additional prize will be awarded to the object voted for by the Folksy community.
Winning: The winners' works will feature in Sue Ryder’s flagship store in Camden in the New Year.
Key dates:
30 October 2009 – you can claim your free bag of clothes at your local Sue Ryder store by taking your downloading voucher from www.folksy.com
6 December 2009, 6pm - the deadline for submissions.
7 December 2009 – winners announced.
7 – 13 December 2009 - online auction for all the items entered.
All proceeds will be given to Sue Ryder.
