People who are dying are scared of being in pain, of being a burden and of being alone. But every day, people die without the comfort, care and support that would give them a good death. Thousands more struggle to cope with a neurological condition that leaves them disabled, exhausted and in pain. Please help us be there for what lies ahead.
Life changed for Peter when he was diagnosed with several life-limiting conditions within a short space of time, including Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), kidney cancer, sarcoidosis of the lungs and diabetes. Peter went from being a hard-working landscape gardener, husband and playful grandfather, to needing full care and support at the age of just fifty nine.
Peter attended Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Day Hospice weekly, for over two and a half years, and his wish to die at home was supported by the Hospice team.
His wife Jan comments: “The medical and spiritual care and the gentle kindness given to Peter at the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice was so, so precious. For the last eighteen months of his life Peter looked forward to attending every Monday and rarely missed a session despite his complex health conditions. Without fail, he returned home with raised spirits.
“I am so grateful to Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice; we could face each day with confidence knowing support was there when needed. Peter’s trust in the team was absolute, as was mine.
“Over a period of time, the Sue Ryder team were able to reassure Peter that he would not die in pain. He could no longer speak but I have no doubt, the smile he gave members of the team who visited the day before he died was of deepest gratitude, joy and love.”
We want to help more people who are living with a life-changing condition to make the most of each day. By giving just a small amount on a regular basis, you can help us be there for people at the most difficult time of their lives.
Any amount you can give will help families like Peter’s, at one of the most difficult times of their lives, and help ensure we can continue to be here for future generations.
