When John joined one of our care centres as a volunteer, having survived a stroke. We had recently welcomed a new resident who has also survived a stroke, but who had lost communication and was mostly in his bed. We wanted John to meet him. We introduced him to the resident's family, so they knew who would be visiting their dad - especially as they lived some distance from the home. John worked tirelessly to find ways to help communication between them, including attending Speech and Language Therapy sessions.
The resident now uses a wheelchair rather than staying in his room all day and is showing signs of improved recognition - he looks forward to John's visits and they have developed a strong bond.
