When we had Mike, who was a keen football fan and a Crewe Alexandra supporter, at one of our hospices, he confided that he longed to get to the last match of the season.
It meant a lot to him to go the final home game, but his family said they couldn’t see how on earth that could be managed.
Our hospice staff told them not to worry – they had a plan!
They helped Mike to go to that match by teaching him how to deliver his own pain control medication.
It enabled him not just to spend the day with his mates, cheering his team on (and they won, as it happens), but to also join them in the pub after for that all-important post-match discussion over a pint.
